One of the more popular multimedia players available today has to be the free open source player VLC which is available through VideoLan. Those that have had a chance to use VLC on a desktop PC will probably know what a simple piece of software this is, one that seems to be compatible with a variety of different media formats without the need of codec downloads.
This first version is a port of the iOS version, basically just to get it up and running for the VLC team start working and improving, pretty much everything will change. At least the UI, even if it’s horrible, it’s not an obvious iOS design, so at least there’s that.
For some time now, VideoLan has been requested to port their VLC player over to the Android operating system and it looks like the time has finally come. Android users can now enjoy VLC on their Android devices. It’s important to note that this is an early port and VideoLan has made sure that they got the word out to advice users that as an early port, this beta player may not be fully stable. As such, if you are looking for a bug free app, it may not be the time for you to install this app just yet. However, if you are a power user and would like to get a jump start on the features that this app offers, you are free to download. In terms of compatibility, VLC for Android will work on the majority of Android devices provided that they have support the NEON engine for ARMv7 processors. So far, the first reviews on VLC for Android have been quite good. Of course a few bugs have been reported, but one of the features that has been highlighted has been its ability to multitask.
Some Specifications:
- "Great job guys, works great playing up to 720p mkv files and even shows styled subs."
- "Lags on 1080p even with hardware acceleration enabled and totally lag and crashed my phone when I tried to play a 10 bit Hi10p 720p mkv file in SW but it shows a lot of promise. Will still stick with Dice and MX video players but will definitely try this out every now and then especially when there's updates."
